Next Door CBD, Sydney

When asking my friends where to find some really good Italian food in Sydney, my best friend Jasmine recommended a little place called "Made In Italy". I had been planning to go after my exams to celebrate and satisfy my Italian food cravings but to my surprise, I ended up getting invited to their CBD's new dining area & bar called "Next Door". Why the name? This is because it is literally "next door" from their Made in Italy pizzeria 😂

Around the corner from Wynyard station in York Lane is where these two hidden gems reside. While Made in Italy is pretty much a counter where you can order fresh pizza and pastas to-go with the only seated being some milk crates by the waiting area, Next Door is a more formal space providing actual seated dining areas and a bar. At first I was a little confused because never having been to Made in Italy before, I was wondering why they would situate two stores next to each other. Thankfully Jasmine did come along with me and identify the menu as being from Made in Italy and suddenly it all made sense.

We come here on our Friday evening when the place is bustling with diners (although not in the pictures above because I took them at the end of the night). The lighting is dimly lit with the most highlighted area being the colourful and fully equipped bar. There is a hilarious tip jar that is labelled "Help me get to Disney World" and the guy behind the counter is wearing this awesome Fresh Prince shirt. Also a great selection of 90's tracks blasts from the speakers. I love this place already! The walls are quite minimal save for the Next Door CBD and hip hop/Ice Cube & Smokey murals. Altogether we feel that this creates a very chill and relaxed atmosphere which is perfect and just what we need after a long week of work!

The staff are all so friendly and with the recommendations of the guy behind the counter, we make our orders. We go for a bocconcini salad, Gamberi pizza, and the Mamma Mia pasta with gnocchi. Gnocchi is not actually one of the pasta choices written on the menu but just ask and you shall receive 😉

The orders of each diner are served from the Made in Italy staff coming in through next door. We grab some table water at the bar and it is not long before our orders come out one by one. It barely fits on our tiny table and medium sized pizzas don't fit on the pizza stands they have but somehow we managed to fit everything on there!

I see red, yellow and green and therefore I conclude that this is a well-balanced meal ❤️ 💛 💚

Bocconcini Salad w/ mixed salad, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and bocconcini $13

A really generous serving of salad! First things first, we were so blown away with how huge the cucumbers were. Whether they were actually that big or sliced very expertly on an angle, we will still be fascinated. The salad dressing comes separately in a little container so you won't be served a soggy salad and you can use as much dressing as you please. Great and very fresh salad. Definitely recommend if you love your serve of veggies with a meal like I do!

Gamberi Pizza w/ fresh prawns, oregano, parmesan, chilli flakes & garlic (Medium) $18

I'M SO IMPRESSED WITH THIS PIZZA. Basically what happened was that Jasmine ate 1/4 of the meals and I ended up eating the rest. And I'm a slow eater but until the very end, this pizza base didn't get even the slightest bit soggy and stayed nice and crispy! It is thin but very tasty. The prawn toppings was very fresh and juicy tasting and I loved the tomatoey garlic sauce!

p.s. that leaf on top of the pizza doesn't come with it. Jas just chucked it on top from our salad because "aesthetic" 😂

Mamma Mia Pasta (GNOCCHI) w/ Italian sausage, mushrooms, fresh cream, chilli in Napoletana sauce + parmesan and fresh parsley $18

As mentioned before, gnocchi isn't written on the menu but we were recommended it so just ask for it when you order! The gnocchi was absolutely amazing being such pillowy and soft potato cushions. The Mamma Mia sauce was beautiful being a creamy and spicy Napoletana sauce. At first the heat in the sauce was a bit strange but I grew to really like it! Generous amounts of sausage, mushrooms, and parmesan were throughout the dish. Really yummy and just hit the spot for my Italian food craving. Lets say it all together, MAMMA MIA!!

We stayed a bit past closing time but the staff kindly waited for us to finish our meal at our own pace - a big thank you! The food was so delicious and as Jasmine and I agreed, this is where everyone should go for classic Italian food that is done right and bursting with flavours. Nothing we had was bad and the portions are overly generous. This is definitely my new go-to and I'm so glad that long gone are the days of sitting on milk crates because there's nothing like chill vibes and seating hehe.

110% recommend you guys all check it out! Please let me know if you do or if you have, and what your experience was like xx

Thank you for reading!
