Glacage, Bankstown
Monday, August 24, 2020Actually me upon hearing about this location: An actually aesthetic brunch cafe in Bankstown? WHERE?!
Bankstown has a good number of local gems but a new brunch cafe in the area always perks my interest! This was a while ago but when I spotted @thefatcouple head down to Bankstown for an aesthetic and delicious looking brunch and just generally being surprised that I didn't hear or see it sooner myself, I knewwww this is where I was dragging the b-f on the weekend.
Just around the corner from House of Thai and Chocolates Del Mondo on what is actually a busy road yet with low foot traffic, we find a small line just after noon waiting for a table at Glacage. What a hidden place for a cafe, I love it!
I really wanted a seat in the main and front area where there's more flowers, green plant walls, warmth, and bright indirect lighting (perfect for photos) but instead we could only get a table down at the back for the amount of time we were willing to wait*
* - the amount of time PATRICK was willing to wait 🙊
The back of the cafe is more 'garden shed'-like with its tin roofing, wooden buckets and slightly clattered look. It has it's own charm such as the quirky lights and mix of green and dried plants. But it's definitely so much darker and less prettier and aesthetic than the front of the cafe.
My minor disappointment was also with the heat lamps which cast a very red/pink lighting over my photos. But this doesn't really affect the food in the cafe or your experience, so it's just my qualm when I took photos - don't anyone worry!
The service was not that great and I found them a little bit abrupt. We were given menus and asked to make our orders at the front counter. It was after noon so things appeared to be winding down but then at the counter they made me feel really rushed as if I was trying to put in an order when the kitchen was already closed. Not a vibe I want to feel on the weekend at all.
Flat White $3.50
A reaaaallly good coffee. They use coffee beans from St Ali's Coffee Roaster which I haven't heard of before but am now a fan of!
Berry Delish Smoothie $8.90
This had mixed berries, chia seeds, honey and coconut water. Technically it's not a smoothie at all and more like a frappe with its icy slushie texture. Patrick enjoyed this but to be honest I found it kind of unremarkable for the price.
Food arrived not too long after which I'm always super happy about after a long wait for the table in the first place!
Shakshuka $16.90
If you have never had shakshuka before then what are you doing? Haahaha! Shakshuka is a popular dish for brunch with its baked eggs in a Mediterranean blend of tomatoes, olive oil, capsicums and spices. This one is topped with sujuk, fetta cheese and chives and then served with a side of Lebanese bread.
The shakshuka and baked eggs are really delicious. It's warm, slightly spicy, and oh so flavoursome. The eggs are a delight as well not being too overdone. One thing is that while I love Lebanese bread it does not suit the shakshuka at all. It's flat bread status means that it doesn't successfully absorb the saucy goodness from the dish or make a very good vessel to spoon up to your mouth.
Eggs Benedict $16
+ Grilled Halloumi $3.50
A classic brunch option and growing favourite for this guy. Poached eggs on sourdough toast with smoked salmon, sauteed spinach and creamy hollandaise sauce. This one here with an extra side of grilled halloumi. A wholesome and delicious dish! Really well done.
Glacage has great coffee and really yummy food which makes it a great place for a start to the day or a weekend brunch. Definitely try to get a seat at the front of the restaurant because it's so much prettier and nicer up there but overall still a great addition to the area!

Due to the high amount of loads from different parts of the globe to Australia there has been a concern about the regularity of the environmental impact of these vast transports.
