ProChef Butter Flavoured Spray Review and Recipes!
Sunday, April 23, 2017Hey everyone! A few months ago I was sent a generous number of Pascoe's new ProChef Butter Flavoured Spray by their PR company Devahasdin, to review and thats what todays post will be all about. I've also included a few fun recipes in the format of Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner-Dessert that I cooked up using this spray to give you an idea of the versatile ways you can use it in your varied meals.
Cooking spray is usually marketed towards those cooking on the BBQ grill, which I am sure it is perfect for especially with the way our Aussie BBQs always pan out - but because we rarely make use of our own BBQ at home I've found my own way to make this work wonderfully using regular kitchen appliances for everyday use.
So what is ProChef Butter Flavoured Spray?
It is a Canola based cooking spray with the rich and creamy taste of butter. An excerpt from the media release states:
Why canola oil? It is simply the healthiest and best choice to cook with for these reasons:
• It’s high in monounsaturated fat
• It’s low in saturated fat
• It’s a good source of essential omega-3 fats
• It has a high smoke point
• It has a neutral flavor
• It has a light texture
When something is high in monounsaturated fats instead of saturated fats like butter and cheese, it can help reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol levels and lower your risk of heart disease. Canola is the richest cooking oil source of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fat that has been linked to heart health.
On my first use of this spray, the smell immediately reminded me of freshly popped popcorn from the cinemas! Absolutely delightful. The taste of the spray itself also definitely has a buttery taste, but is not suitable to be eaten straight on foods such as toast because at the end of the day it remains a canola oil based cooking spray.
I've been cooking with this spray over the past few months and it's been really great. With the spray I can really ensure I only use enough to evenly coat my pan, never more and never less. Additionally the cooked food will always carry a subtle butter flavour which is such a bonus. Kind of the best of both worlds!
It retails at Coles for the affordable price of $4 - which is also an 'Everyday' special. ProChef Butter Flavoured Spray is great asset to have in your kitchen and I'm so excited to use it during my next BBQ because I just know it will be perfect with all the meats, seafoods, corn cobs and any other thing you can throw on the barbie :)
Below is 3 recipes I have used the butter flavoured spray for over the course of Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner. Feel free to give them and go and let me know how it works out for you, or be inspired and go forth to be creative!
BREAKFAST
Immediately when anyone mentions breakfast, my first thoughts go to PANCAKES!
And this is without a doubt hard to pass up when Pascoe's themselves have included a picture of a perfect stack of pancakes on each can of ProChef Butter Flavoured spray. This is my personal recipe that I developed a few years ago for fool proof pancakes. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
- 1 C self raising flour
- 1 large egg
- 4 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3/4 C milk
- 1/4 teaspoon bicarb soda
- Optional but recommended: maple syrup, berries, fresh fruits, orange juice, etc
Method:
- Beat together the egg, sugar and vanilla extract
- Sift in the self raising flour
- Dissolve the bicarb soda into the milk and slowly add to the mixture
- Spray an even layer of ProChef butter flavoured spray on a frying pan, off of the heat
- Heat the frying pan on medium heat
- Add a spoonful of pancake batter to the pan, flip the pancake when bubbles begin to appear on the surface
- Serve with your choice of toppings such as maple syrup, fresh fruits, ice cream, etc
LUNCH
There's so many choices of what to cook for lunch and if I'm being honest these days sometimes my lunch is my breakfast and other times it is the same as my dinner. But if I'm looking to prepare something suitable for my schedule and I can take to school then I'd go with salad.
Not just any plain old salad though, I like my salads to be both healthy and filling. This is the recipe for my leafy greens & quinoa salad with pan fried chicken breast:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup tricoloured quinoa, cooked according to packet instructions
- Leafy green salad mix; lettuce, rocket, baby spinach
- Diced red onion
- Diced tomatoes
- Chicken breast, skinless and boneless
- ProChef butter flavoured spray
- Seasoning: salt, pepper, paprika
- Salad dressing of your choice
Method:
- Pound the chicken breast to ensure tenderness and uniform thickness for even cooking
- Trim excess fat off chicken breast and season with S&P, and paprika
- Spray an even layer of ProChef butter flavoured spray on a frying pan, off of the heat
- Heat the frying pan on medium heat. Add the chicken breast and cook until golden on one side (4 minutes for me) before flipping
- Allow the chicken breast to rest for 5 minutes before slicing
- Mix the leafy green salad, quinoa, red onions and tomatoes together
- Serve salad with chicken breast and dressing of choice
DINNER
This dish for dinner is a favourite in our household: my mom's special lamb chops with baked potatoes and greens! The secret is all in the lamb marinade which turns out to actually be quite simple but so finger licking good. The lamb can be cooked in a frying pan, broiler, or even a mini grill oven. For this recipe I used the mini grill oven.
So here's the recipe:
Ingredients:
- Lamb chops
- Marinade: oyster sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, sesame oil
- Baby potatoes, washed, cooked and cubed
- Oregano
- Salt and pepper
- Broccolini
- ProChef butter flavoured spray
- Gravy (optional)
Method:
- Mix the marinade ingredients with the lamb chops, cover and leave aside overnight or at least 1 hour
- Place baby potatoes into a bowl and lightly coat with ProChef butter flavoured spray. Mix with oregano and S&P
- Spray a baking sheet with ProChef butter flavoured spray to ensure the food doesn't stick. Space out the lamb chops and potatoes onto the sheet and place into mini oven on high heat
- Keep an eye on the oven to flip the lamb and potatoes
- Add the broccolini into the oven in the last 5 minutes of cooking
- Serve with gravy (optional)
I experimented around and also developed a recipe for garlic butter lamb chops with mashed potatoes and greens. It might not make sense using butter in a recipe with the ProChef spray but I find it's completely optional if you do just want more of that buttery flavour with your lamb! So check out another recipe:
Ingredients:
- Lamb chops
- Crushed garlic cloves
- Rosemary
- Butter (optional)
- Baby potatoes, washed, peeled and boiled
- Minced garlic
- Salt and pepper
- Milk/cream
- Broccolini, blanched
- ProChef butter flavoured spray
- Gravy (optional)
Method:
- Mash the boiled potatoes and add in minced garlic, S&P, and milk/cream. Set aside
- Coat a frying pan with an even layer of ProChef butter flavoured spray. Turn on high heat and add the blanched broccolini
- Sauté for 2 minutes before removing from heat
- Make cuts into the lamb chops to ensure they won't curl in the cooking process. Season with S&P
- Coat the frying pan again, this time with a generous amount of ProChef butter flavoured spray
- Heat the pan on high heat and add the lamb chops in. Fry/sear each side to your liking
- Add in the crushed garlic cloves, sprigs of rosemary and tablespoon of butter (optional)
- Tilt the pan and use a spoon to baste the lamb with the liquid oil and fats/melted butter
- Serve with gravy (optional)
Hope you all enjoyed my review and recipe! :) Until next time xx
