Won Jo, Strathfield
Wednesday, January 25, 2017Mmmm doesn't this look like such a delicious picture to begin the post with!!! Long story short the day we visited Won Jo, was same day as our girl Jasmine's Graduation Exhibition. There was a lot of free food and drinks from the pop-up bars and food trucks, but unfortunately just not enough under the budget. We had a few dumplings and ciders until everything ran out. Hence, the late night dinner feast.
Won Jo is one of our groups favourite places to eat Korean food in Strathfield. It was one of the first places we all had Korean BBQ for Kat's 16th birthday and since then, we've all been coming back to try different things on the menu. The look of the restaurant has changed a lot and now, it boasts of a colourful and brightly lit display menu out the front as well as a clean and cosy interior. A lot of people say the food isn't as good as it used to be but in my opinion it really depends on what you order.
There's quite a lot of seating as it extends all the way down to the narrow kitchen and we are lucky to get a spacious table even when the entire place is usually very popular and busy.
Service is fast and polite as they hand you their menu and serve you your food all on time. The menu is abundant with different options from stews to BBQ meats and it seems like if you have a craving for any particular Korean dish, it will definitely be somewhere in this menu. We're all quite tired and have an upcoming KBBQ date so we opt for the Korean dishes instead.
Table water, rice, banchan and sauces are bought out promptly after we place our orders. However in the white container where we expected the usual trio of sauce there is only ssamjang dipping sauce, garlic and green chillies, and what seems like pickled radish/fish.
Kimchi Soft Tofu Stew $14.50
Warm, hearty, and delicious! It is served bubbling hot with a bowl of white rice on the side which we all share.
Napa Wraps with Pork - Medium $35
Tender pork belly marinated in various spices and boiled to be served alongside napa cabbage, lettuce, and oyster radish kimchi (see below). This was my first time actually ordering this dish which they call "bo-ssam" in Korean but I've watched a billion YouTubers eating this dish when they do their travel vlogs in Korea. Terry and Jas who have been there themselves say it's definitely nowhere near as good, and Anne-mary says it's not even as good as the other Korean restaurants in the area. But overall we all agree this is a good serving and still yum! The pork is a little bit on the dry side but paired with the sweet and crispy napa/lettuce and crunchy and spicy radish kimchi, I really enjoyed the combination of textures and flavour!
Napa Cabbage, Lettuce, Oyster and Radish Kimchi
Fried Chicken - Half $15
The fried chicken is boneless and has the Korean Fried Chicken crunchy batter coating on it which we all love! It is tender, juicy and not oily. Surprisingly it also comes served with some salad greens, and a generous pot of sweet-spicy sauce! Really enjoyed this and the portion is bigger than it looks.
I know there's a bunch of other foods that Won Jo does really well which I haven't touched on in this post but I do actually highly recommend you check out the restaurant for yourself because I believe that it's quite a solid Korean food joint!
Thank you for reading! xx
