This year, I have so many things I want to do differently and so many things I want to do more. One of them is brunch! When I was still in university it was so easy to brunch... gather up some girl friends, choose a cafe, and head there for some good food and drink before or after class. We'd already have an excuse to be out and there is no shortage of Instaworthy cafes around the city. It's a lot harder these days because everyone's working and the city is no longer the easiest place to drive to or meet up. But on the rare days we can get together, it's super memorable and good food is a must.
Recently a few of us had a Friday off so we decided to head to Matinee in Marrickville.
It is one of the newcomers that opened up early last year. Terry and Fiona described it as "a cafe with lots of natural light" but upon stumbling inside, we found the cafe was so much more. The large wooden and marble curve at the center of the cafe (housing the bar and kitchen) was a huge nod to last century's milk bars. To add to it, the decor was very simple yet retro! Sky blue floors, orange tiled table tops, green velvet chairs, green leather chairs, and a huge art-deco red tasseled chandelier.
There's four of us so we choose a table by the window with some soft indirect natural lighting. We're immediately served by a really lovely waitress who lets us know about the daily specials before leaving us to peruse over the menu.
There's a long day ahead for me and it's never too late to grab another coffee!
Flat White $4
Sparkling blackberry kombucha $6
A really subtle berry flavour in this super fizzy kombucha! What we were all really more interested in was the unique straw/spoon it came with. Where can I get one?
The waiting time for all the food and drinks to come out was less than 15 minutes which I think is actually pretty great. Really felt like it zoomed by. Once they arrived, everyone's plate was so fresh, green and wholesome looking!!! I love it!
Pork cassoulet; coffee rubbed chilli fennel pork shoulder, borlotti beans, tomato, cumin parmesan crumb, basil pesto, poached eggs and sourdough $20
This was my order and first things first, I almost forgot how expensive brunch dishes can be. Nonetheless, this was a huge meal that literally could've even passed as a dinner. The pork shoulder is very tender and gently pulled apart. It so beautifully absorbs all the flavours of the spicy and complex tomato based sauce! It is warm and hearty and reminds me of the ragu my mum makes at home. The sourdough toast runs out way too quick as usual, and my weak tolerance for spicy food starts to kick in but the two poached eggs and generous slab of goats cheese really helps. Overall a beautiful dish but personally, way too heavy for a brunch.
Chicken salad w/ poached chicken, quinoa, grilled greens and sweet potato $17
Was very jealous of Anne-mary and mirin this the whole time because of those roasted sweet potato slices with the skin! Yuummm.
Cumin, quinoa and coriander felafel w/ baba ganoush, roasted mushrooms, grilled greens, pistachio and sumac coconut yogurt dressing $18
These felafel were pretty good despite the coriander addition! And surprisingly a good portion as well. The baba ganoush was also so creamy and complimented the crisp felafel perfectly.
Special: Chickpea and sweet potato fritters w/ avocado, poached eggs, grilled greens and beetroot goats curd
Fiona ordered the special and that is brave! I'm usually a little wary about specials because they seem experimental in the not-tried-and-tested way but this day, Matinee has really nailed it. The fritters are so sweet and savoury and I only tried a little but I found it completely more-ish. The grilled broccolini provides a good crunchy texture component while the beetroot goats curd has an earthy yet tart flavour that compliments the sweetness of the whole dish. If they still have this, I recommend!
Matinee was the perfect little cafe to have our brunch and catch ups. Brunch is an especially expensive meal in Sydney but the taste and quality at Matinee makes it absolutely worth it! It is both family friendly and friend friendly with the great service, and cosy and quaint atmosphere. I highly recommend this place!
